Portland has passed a law preventing both public and private use of facial recognition according to reports by CNN and CNET.

The new law is established as two ordinances: one prohibiting private use, and the other requiring city bureaus to complete assessments of use within the last 90 days. The ordinance preventing private use will go into effect January 1, 2021.

“Portlanders should never be in fear of having their right of privacy be exploited by either their government or by a private institution,” Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said during a hearing Wednesday — OneZero. Overall, this decision means great news for the people of Portland.
