After Twitter Hack, Senator Asks Why DMs Aren't Encrypted

Last Wednesday, about 130 Twitter accounts were the target of a large scale hack. A large majority of the accounts affected were considered “high profile” with some belonging to Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Kanye West, and more.

After the attack, Senator Ron Wyden was quick to point out the social network’s lack of end-to-end encryption for direct messages:

“Mr. Dorsey told me the company was working on end-to-end encrypted direct messages. It has been nearly two years since our meeting, and Twitter DMs are still not encrypted, leaving them vulnerable to employees who abuse their internal access to the company's systems, and hackers who gain unauthorized access.”

If Twitter were to implement end-to-end encryption, hackers would have less access to personal information. Hopefully this changes soon.
